Contemporary public art has adopted ever more conventional ways of expression, and instead of seeing the traditional monument in the middle of the village square, these days we get interactive installations, objects sticking out of walls, murals, posters, outdoor art, things created in partnership with communities. What’s happening is that artists are not just finding new ways of involving themselves in urban spaces but are also trying to stimulate interaction from members of the public and to demystify the role of art in society.

So the public’s participation in works of art is ever more sought after, sometimes forming the central element in its esoteric construction as we can see in some works which appeal to the sensory pleasures of the citizen. In effect, the observer is invited to interrupt his everyday routine in order to enjoy art, not only as a simple observer but also as a participant in the perceptive experience art provides.

The Lonarte 10 project meets the challenges of public art with works in excess of 4 metres in height, applied to vertical structures which will be placed along the length of Calheta beach. The artists involved are four dozen exponents of the plastic visual arts, of different generations and nationalities, ranging from José de Guimarães to Gabriel Abrantes, and the result will be a piece of visual art created for this specific space, and reflecting the features of the site.

The show, which will run from June to September 2010, will offer 10 new works in plastic art every month, creating a cultural dynamic the like of which has never before been seen in one of the loveliest places in Madeira, famous for its swimming and sailing opportunities

Lonarte 10 will be a responsible social project, and many of the original works of art will be offered for sale in the Prazeres Gallery, with all proceeds going to the many institutions of social solidarity in Concelho.
